GSKILL Zeta R5 Neo DDR5 R-DIMM Memory Review

With the review of AMD Ryzen Threadripper 7980X Processor, we also got a chance to test GSKILL Zeta R5 Neo DDR5 R-DIMM Memory 128GB kit. The GSKILL Zeta R5 Neo is a high performance and an overclockable DDR5 R-DIMM memory designed for use in compatible AMD workstation systems.

The GSKILL Zeta R5 Neo DDR5 R-DIMM is a quad channel memory kit with AMD EXPO support to enable easy memory overclock.

What are DDR5 R-DIMMs?

In previous generation of DDR memory (DDR3 and DDR4) standards, in a server and consumer/client build, the DDR memory modules shares same physical as well as pin layout resulting same modules can be used between platforms.

But now DDR5 are divided into Unbuffered DIMMs (UDIMMs) and Registered DIMMs (RDIMMs) types. Both are no longer physically or pin-out or even supply voltage compatible. They are keyed differently, so you cannot insert UDIMMs on server motherboards that support RDIMMs and vice versa.

DDR5 R-DIMM module have an extra chip called registered clock driver (RCD) chip which UDIMMs do not have. RCD chip or simply known as a "register" is a critical component of RDIMM modules and serves as a mediator between the CPU and Memory, it receives the instructions first from the CPU before sending them to the memory modules. This reduces the strain on the CPU’s memory controller, helps reduce impact on data signal integrity and maintains same memory speed even under heavy memory workloads.

DDR5 memory standards is specified to run at 1.1V with power management moved from the motherboard to the DIMM itself. But both UDIMMs and RDIMMs runs on different supply voltages, UDIMMs operates with 5V as supplied input voltage while RDIMMs operates at 12V. This voltage is later converted to 1.1V with Power Delivery Components (PMIC) on the module.
