Specifications
Package
MSI MPG A1000G PSU comes in a securely packaged box with PSU graphics, Model name and features highlights on front and the back of the box.
Inside the box
Box includes MSI MPG A1000G with modular cables, Power cable, PSU mounting screws and User manual
Beside regular pig-tail type PCIe cables, MSI also included end-to-end 8-pin PCIe modular cables for clean cable looks at GPU end. Very happy to see this type of small attention to detail stuff from MSI
Looks
MSI has done a great effort on aesthetics of the PSU. With a matte black paint and unique fan grill and aluminum product stickers, gives the PSU a premium feel.
Inside
Every time when I open a PSU, I have to void the factory warranty sticker, so this time just for fun I moved the factory sealed aside to access the screw underneath and repasted it back afterwards. Small scratches on the sticker are caused due to improper handling not during removal process. Used hot air and razor blade for removal.
MSI MPG A1000G power supply offers very good PCB build quality with all Nippon Chemi-Con capacitors with 105C rating.
Testing
Test system configuration -
CPU | Intel i9-9900K |
Board | MSI Z390 GAMINF PLUS |
RAM | 2 X 8GB Corsair DDR4 3000Mhz |
SSD | Corsair Force GT 240GB SSD |
GFX | ASUS GeForce RTX3080 TUF Gaming OC |
PSU | MSI MPG A1000G |
Case | Corsair iCUE 4000X Case |
Display | ASUS PB287Q |
OS | Windows 10 |
The MSI MPG A1000G power supply handled above gaming setup very comfortably, with RTX 3080 and i9-9900K maxed stable overclocked.
Custom made DC Active dummy load PSU tester.
Load Test
To test the PSU on my Active load test, I have manually increased the load in Amps on 12v first rail, 12v second rail, 5v and 3.3v rail to simulate 100%, 80% 50% and 20% load. Since this PSU is having only single 12v rail, so divided the load in half on both 12v loads on my tester.
5V stand-by and -12V supply was left at a constant 0.5amp load throughout the test run.
Maximum theoretical load handling capacity of my tester is somewhat around 1500W, but due to MOSFETs safe operating area (SOA) characteristics and thermal load handling capacity of the heatsinks, this tester can handle Max 1300W.. For safety reasons I have also installed a thermal controller which turn OFF the attached PSU if temperature exceeds SOA specifications.
During test the PSU ran smoothly close to 1145W of load, when tried to pull more the PSU turned itself OFF showing the proper working of Overload protection .
Pros
- Compact design
- 80 Plus Gold certified
- Fully modular
- Single 8-pin PCIe cables Included
